Destroy all bad software.
Twenty years in technology, from writing code for core banking systems at CIBC to building and running a 50-plus-person engineering organization as Director of Engineering, then Vice President, at an Ontario software engineering consultancy. In between: technical process and QA leadership in CIBC Capital Markets, and QA, development and program management at Roadmunk through its growth years.

Bad software isn't an inconvenience. It drains capital, speed and morale a little every day, and most of it was never built to scale. It was built to survive the next quarter.
I started in core banking at CIBC, where a change is reviewed before it ships, access is justified before it's granted, and the auditor is a regular visitor. I spent ten years inside those controls. Then I ran engineering at an Ontario consultancy, building the practices a 50-person organization needs to ship quickly without losing them.
A policy nobody follows is bad software for people. So when we get a company ready for SOC 2 or ISO, the controls are written around how your team already works and the evidence builds up as your engineers ship. The audit goes well because the company runs that way, not because someone scrambled the week before.
In a CTO or COO seat it's the same work from the other direction: the decisions on the record, a cadence the company runs on, and a function built to hand to your full-time hire.
Clear is kind. I'll tell you what's broken, what to fix first, and what can wait.
